Mission, not Maintenance
becoming an evangelistic community
by Ps Shane Oldfield
Pastor Shane Oldfield delivered the following sermon to The Coast Community Church, Kincumber, NSW, Australia.
In this sermon, Ps Shane looks at the big E word evangelism and how many Christians are afraid to carry The Great Commission forward to their friends and neighbors.
Pastor Shane says...
There is something which most Christians and non-Christians hate. It is witnessing, what we refer to as evangelism.
Say the E word and people shudder. We get visions of arrogant Bible bashers trying to force stuff on to others.
Mention the E word and some of us get anxious, churning stomachs. Some of us get guilty, others just switch off.
But Jesus said that He had come to urge sinners, not the self-righteous, back to God (cf Matthew 9:13).
He also said that He had come to seek and save the lost (cf Luke 19:10).
The E word doesnt scare Jesus!
Jesus says to us...
All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. [Matthew 28:18-20 NIV]
I am sorry to be the one to break it to you, but evangelism is Heavens priority. Witnessing is not an option. To be a healthy church we need to have a missional mentality, not just a maintenance mentality. If we are uncomfortable with that, something has to change!

[Jesus] said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."
Mark 16: 15-18 NIV
